The Geopark
According to a study by Professor Evangelos Velitzelos, the fossils found in the fossil-bearing sites of Agios Nikolaos are unique in the European area and of invaluable scientific importance, as they represent the results of an original calcareous lithification.
Indeed, the research program and restoration work have revealed in the area we are focusing on, palm trees, fruits, and roots of palm trees, as well as shallow water fauna such as mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms, etc. The interaction of many geological phenomena over millions of years has led to the creation of this work of nature, which was revealed and shaped in the form of a Geopark through a series of works (cleaning – desalination – stabilization – gluing/connecting pieces – hydrophobization).
Its rescue from all kinds of deterioration, and especially from human factors, remains a major challenge…
Educational Center
At the Agios Nikolaos Geopark, there is an Educational Center that hosts panels with evidence from the research conducted and valuable data about the wider area.
